This class in chemistry is intended as a college-preparatory course for those students with a strong background in science and a desire to pursue a degree after high school. Course Outline Unit 1 Introduction to Chemistry and Matter Topics: matter and change, measurements and calculations Unit 2 Organization of Matter Topics: atoms, arrangement of electrons, periodic law, chemical bonding Unit 3 Language of Chemistry Topics: chemical formulas and chemical compounds, chemical equations and reactions, stoichiometry Unit 4 Phases of Matter Topics: physical characteristics of gases, liquids, and solids, molecular composition of gases Unit 5 Solutions and Their Behavior Topics: solutions, ions in aqueous solutions and Colligative properties, acids and bases, acid-base titration and pH Unit 6 Chemical Reactions Topics: reaction energy and reaction kinetics, chemical equilibrium, oxidation-reduction reactions Unit 7 Organic and Nuclear Chemistry Topics: carbon and hydrocarbons as well as other organic compounds, radioactive decay, nuclear radiation, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion
